COVID-19 has forced both students and instructors to adapt to learning and teaching in a different way this fall. Just like everything else, exam time is different at VIU. Since most exams are taken at home, they will be considered to be take-home exams. VIU has included all timed tests in the exam schedule. However it is possible that you will be allowed more time to take the test. Your instructors will explain everything.

Other than the timed exams as shown on the exam calendar, we expect many nontimed, take-home tests to be given in the last week of classes. They will be due back the next week. You will receive all information from your instructors, including deadlines and submission requirements. This means you might have multiple exams due on the same date, which can make time management essential.

Explore the following information to find out about the various types of tests this year. Learn how you can prepare and what tips you can use to make sure you are ready for each one.

Types of online testing

Here are some types of tests your instructors might have chosen to use this semester in order to evaluate your learning.

Multiple-choice exams

The instructor may decide that tests can be conducted online in the same manner as in class. In this case, they are aware that peer collaboration (peers talking to one another and sharing their best answers for peer reviewing) will take place. They are aware that this collaboration is a great learning strategy. Students will learn as they take the test.

Befriend a few classmates, share your knowledge and work together on the test. Most likely, the instructor will expect that you will have all your books open. This means that the instructor will assume you will have your books open so you can easily look up answers. Microsoft OneNote makes it easy to create tags that allow you to quickly locate information in your notes using key terms. Make sure to follow these exam preparation tips, which are outlined on the Learning Matters page.

Multiple-choice examination with various versions

While your instructor may conduct online tests the same way as usual, VIULearn will allow them to create a "bank", which means they have to work harder. This creates a "bank" of questions that each student must answer. It reduces collaboration. Students can still discuss and answer each question in one room or virtually, but this would mean they'd have to answer all questions for the two tests they're assigned.

Each of you should pick one study buddy. Together, make a promise to help your fellow students prepare for their exams. Studying together and teaching each other what you are learning can help you to learn more. You will also find that you are more likely to make friends when you work together to study. If you build at least one friendship in each class, loneliness in virtual learning may drop. Trent University provides additional tips and tricks for studying for open book online exams.

Short-answer Tests

Instructors can use short-answer test to create problem-solving and critical thinking short-answer exams. Short-answer test questions can be used to help students develop critical thinking skills.

Students prep strategy

So that you can better apply concepts to cases and short answers, it is a good idea to start by learning terminology, facts, as well as concepts. If an instructor uses short answer testing, chances are they taught the course using cases. In order to be able to practice applying concepts in cases, make sure that you complete all assignments and cases the instructor assigns. As the test is designed to assist you, be sure to actively participate in any exercises, examples or cases presented in class. For those who don't have the skills to apply the knowledge, it might be worth creating a study team or working with a partner to help one another. Here are some Education Corner tips that can help you prepare to take short answer tests.

General tips for exam prep

These strategies can be used to help you succeed with any type of take-home test.

Time management

Create a schedule with your personal deadline for each exam. This will allow you to not have to submit all of them on the same day. So that you have enough time to prepare for all your exams, create your own due dates. Keep your calendar filled with these dates. It will relieve stress by allowing you to control your schedule within the boundaries of what your instructors expect. Make positive pressure and set a deadline together for each test. Then, hold your friend accountable for following the instructions. To avoid distractions while studying, or working through an entire hour on an exam block, you can turn off notifications from both your phone and your computer. You can also remove all notifications completely from your device. Check out the Learning Matters Manage Time And Concentration page for more information.

Self-care

We may also choose to cut back on activities that bring us joy and belonging. It is possible to see yourself as a more than a human accomplisher. Being well-fed, well-nourished, socially connected, happy and healthy will allow you to bring your best self to every day of your take-home exam.

Study strategies

First, familiarize yourself with your course's learning outcomes. These can be found in the course syllabus. Instructors create quizzes, tests and assessments to help them assess the learning outcomes. Learn more on the Learning Matters Study Skills and Techniques page.

Many students do not realize that their instructor serves as a learning resource. If you're ever in doubt, your instructor is available to help. Please don't be afraid to email, zoom them, or visit virtual office hours. You can find out more at Learning matters about connecting with instructors.

You can help yourself by joining study groups, or having a study buddy. You can both quiz each other and share concepts. Peer Supported Learning (PSL), is an option that may be available to you if it's offered in your program. PSL is a program that supports peer learning and provides free support for study sessions.
