As per recent findings from Market Research Future, the India hydrogen fuel cell vehicle infrastructure is rapidly developing to support the country's ambitious clean energy goals. The India hydrogen fuel cell vehicle infrastructure is a critical enabler for the widespread adoption of hydrogen vehicles, encompassing hydrogen production facilities, refueling stations, and storage systems. Significant investments are being channeled into creating a robust ecosystem to support the growing fleet of hydrogen vehicles, particularly in the heavy-duty transport segment.
Pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission are already demonstrating the viability of hydrogen infrastructure. In March 2025, the government sanctioned five pilot projects involving 37 hydrogen vehicles (buses and trucks) and 9 refueling stations across 10 different routes . This has been expanded with plans to approve an additional 30 hydrogen buses and trucks . Companies like TATA Motors, Reliance Industries, NTPC, HPCL, and BPCL are leading these pilots, testing both hydrogen fuel cell and hydrogen internal combustion engine technologies . The total financial support for these projects is approximately ₹208 crore .
The infrastructure ecosystem is also expanding beyond road transport. In May 2026, Indian Railways approved its first indigenous hydrogen fuel cell trainset, a 10-car train with a 1200 KW engine, set to operate on the Jind-Sonipat section at 75 kmph . An indigenous hydrogen storage and refueling facility has been established at Jind for this project . In the shipping sector, a port-based Green Hydrogen pilot has been commissioned at V.O. Chidambaranar Port, and Deendayal Port Authority, Kandla has commissioned a megawatt-scale indigenous facility . Additionally, the world's highest altitude Green Hydrogen Mobility Project in Leh (at 3,650 meters) has been commissioned with 5 hydrogen buses . The India hydrogen fuel cell vehicle market continues to benefit from this comprehensive infrastructure development.
